Gal Costa S/T 1968

This is the last of a 5 Post day!!! Check out the all the other music I just posted today (Susan Pillsbury, George Jackson, T. Rex and Chrysalis...)

This is one of my favorite Brazilian albums out there. I am a big fan of Tropicalia, and this is definitely a Tropicalia record. For those unfamiliar with this period in Brazilian music history, check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropicalismo

Gal's voice is beautiful, with a timbre that is rich and smoky. This entire album is beautiful/energetic. Enjoy!!!!

Chrysalis S/T

This is Chrysalis's debut and only album. From 1969, it has a lot of psychadelic properties to it and as with many of my other posts, it features a female singer. My favorite track on this album is called April Grove. I heard it in the springtime my sophomore year of college and every since then, it has been very nostaligic and very representative of the spring. Enjoy the album and thank you to "Not Another Psych" blog for the link!

T. Rex- Raw Ramp

I recently picked this 45 of T. Rex up at a local store. First off, I must say that I've heard other T. Rex stuff and I don't think its as distinctive as this track. This track starts off folky (sounds almost like it could be from the 2000's even though it came out in 1971!) Then it progresses into the body of the song, which to me, sounds like 80's alt. rock, with a girl doing monotone, speaky harmonies that are reminiscent of the Pixies....even though this came out more than a decade before. Very strange record, but very cool I must say! I couldn't find a picture online for this and I don't have a working camera currently. Enjoy the music!

George Jackson- Aretha, Sing one for me

I originally heard this song on a Shaolin Sounds record I got from The Sound Garden in Baltimore when I was in high school. The Shaolin Sounds record compiled a whole bunch of Wu-Tang samples, all of which were really good soul songs. This is one of them, which I later found out was by George Jackson (the record didn't label any of the songs).

George Jackson was a guitarist and song writer from Memphis, TN. The songs he helped co-write as well as the artists that performed them, certainly gained more fame than Jackson himself. He co-wrote tunes with Clarence Carter, Z.Z. Hill, Bob Seger, Wilson Pickett, Latimore, Candi Station and the Osmonds. At the point that he recorded "Aretha Sing one foe me," he was at the Hi record studios which signed other notable artists, like Bill Black and Al Green. All of the recordings from Al Green and others in the Hi studio had a very distinctive sound. This is because the studio was converted from a theatre space, giving a very cool natural reverb to many of the recordings (listen to the piano). But I digress....Enjoy the song!

Susan Pillsbury S/T

Susan Pillsbury- S/T 1973 on Sweet Fortune

I promised myself that when I made this blog, this would be my first post. To begin, I wanted to make this blog because I have gotten a great deal of wonderful music for free, via blogspots, and I wanted to post some things that are not already out there. In this blog I'll vary between genres, but as promised it will be more sweet than sour...My hope is to continue to add a new post every week. If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

I love this Susan Pillsbury album! The song Heaven amazing and initially that song dominated the playing time when I took the album out, but I have since realized that the whole album is worthy of a listen straight through. Heaven is stunningly beautiful, but I think the most heartfelt song is "Its hard to be easy." This song is a little more grounded than Heaven (Pun seriously not intended). "Heaven" seems to be an escape from reality, "Its hard..." is a reckoning with it. Its interesting too, in "Heaven" her voice is very sweet and high, and in "It's hard..." her voice sounds a lot more solemn. A couple of the songs do border on being too smooth for me, but all in all, this album is fantastic. Check it out for yourself. Lastly, here is a message from Susan to you via the Very Good Plus message board:

Dear wonderful listeners,
I wish you could know how gratifying it is to suddenly learn that people have been enjoying the album I recorded under the Sweet Fortune label in the 70's. Only a few weeks ago I learned for the first time that in South Korea it has been bootlegged, and I am trying to arrange to have it re-released legally. I have written a good number of pieces since that first album, but I am now a United Methodist minister in North Carolina, and I wouldn't know how to begin getting this new music out there. But just knowing people have been listening to my music is such a sweet smile from the Lord, I can't tell you.

Sincerely,
Susan Pillsbury-Taylor
